This is what People Always Get Wrong
I have a friend who is very talented at the technical aspects of filmmaking.
Yet he always finds himself working for people with less technical talent, but with more of something else.
That other thing, is great taste.
People underestimate how important it is to have great taste when you’re creating content or art of any kind.
I see it all the time with content creators too. They think if they’re smart enough or can film good enough looking content, that they can succeed with that alone. But the great creators who have long lasting careers & businesses, have developed a great sense of taste.
But How Do I Have Better Taste?
That is the million dollar question isn’t it.
Well curating better taste is actually a skill that you can develop, it just takes some studying & dedication towards your craft. Now developing your personal taste is something you need to do on your own, but I can help guide you along that path with a list of tips.
1: Know Yourself Better
You can’t progress towards having great taste if you don’t know what you even like.
And I’m going to give you a guide at the end of this that can help you understand yourself better, but the key to great taste is not taking inspiration from everything. It’s knowing what actually matters for creating what you want.
Intelligence is your width of knowledge, but wisdom is selecting what knowledge matters for you. Be Wise.
2: Study Content, Don’t Just Consume
Studying content, means watching it with an investigative eye. You’re trying to figure out why it works so well, I like to call it uncovering the magic trick.
I personally have watched all of David Fincher’s movies probably around 20 times each trying to uncover the magic. I do the same with content, I rewatch youtube videos, re-read great books & replay reels.
Figure out why great things are great, & you’ll be closer to greatness yourself.
3: Understand your “Genre”
Just like movies & shows, content has “genres” as well. We usually call them niche’s. Going back to my friend from the beginning, I’ve told him before that he simply doesn’t watch enough films. He mostly consumes self help books & technical videos about filmmaking, and that’s great, but it’s not enough.
You need to be consuming the content that’s popular or important to your industry, and yes even the stuff you don’t like. Because even if you intend to “break the rules” you gotta know what rules you’re breaking.
Business books & tutorials can only do so much for you, because the concept of something, and the actual thing are totally different experiences. There’s a lot of popular content I’m not fond of, but I still learn from it. Even if it’s just what not to do.
To revolutionize something, you should know what you’re revolutionizing.
Now you just need to close the gap.
As you start to develop your taste you’ll want to create like the great works you see.
And you’ll probably fail.
Or at least fail to reach the same level of quality, but that’s not a bug, It’s a feature. Closing the gap is where the technical skills are going to matter a lot, and it’s not easy, but it’s extremely fulfilling.
You know Kobe Bryant tried to copy Michael Jordan completely, but had to change his game when he found out that Jordan’s hands were so much larger than his. In the end, he became a legend in his own right.
When you have multiple influences, they disappear into something you can call your own.
